03.11. – 06.11.2016 The 20th German Conference of Women in Physics

The 20th German Conference of Women in Physics (Deutsche Physikerinnentagung, DPT) will take place November 3-6, 2016, in Hamburg.

The DPT is the annual conference of the German Physical Society (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, DPG) and its working group on equal opportunities (Arbeitskreis Chancengleichheit, AKC) for female physicists of all career stages in academia and industry.

All women committed to physics - from pupils to professors and managers - are invited to participate in the scientific exchange among all fields of physical research, to discuss experiences from various working environments, and to contribute to a lively network. As a special event of this year's 20th conference, a panel discussion will address the objectives, opportunities, and status of the initiatives for the advancement of female physicists in the society.

The DPT 2016 is under patronage of Federal Minister Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka and will be hosted by the Physics Department of the University of Hamburg and from the excellence cluster The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI).

26.10. – 28.10.2016 VII EPS Forum Physics and Society

"Getting the Diversity Balance Right in Physics" organised by the European Physical Society in collaboration with the Institute of Physics in London.

The VII Forum will focus on the perennial problem that is faced by many member countries, namely the lack of girls studying physics beyond age 18 and the lack of women working, particularly at the higher levels, in physics related careers.

Broadening topics:
1. How different is the diversity problem in physics across Europe?
2. How can employers gain business advantage by recruiting and retaining a more diverse workforce?
3. How can informal learning encourage under represented groups to study physics?
4. How important are families and schools in supporting under represented groups into physics careers?

Discussion of recommendations of good practice to share across EPS member institutions.
