TWM is an integrated and interdisciplinary Master double degree program; successful students are granted two diploma. The program is jointly offered by the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE, Essen, Germany) and the Radboud University (RU) Nijmegen in the Netherlands. At UDE, the TWM is an independent study program, while it is a track within the Master program Environmental Sciences at RU.

Vision and Mission

Our vision is a water management that acknowledges the multifaceted threats to human life and well being imposed by overuse and overexploitation of freshwater resources and the ecosystems providing the resources. Past experience has proven that mere engineering is not sufficient. Water management needs to integrate ecology and economy, engineering and social sciences, to be able to come up with long-term, i.e. sustainable solutions.

Our mission is to educate the future water manager. We provide the training to understand the basic principles of all related management sectors: ecology, economy, engineering and social and management sciences. We teach the skills and the knowledge to identify relevant challenges and to develop tailored and integrated solutions.

Goals

Water is key to human well-being and the access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental prerequisite for a healthy life. Yet, overuse and overexploitation of rivers, lakes and wetlands bears a serious threat to social life and people's safety, for instance, where countries are required to share the same water resources.

River regulation has dramatically increased the risk of major floods in many regions of the world, with serious implications for people, but also for the economy. Climate change is predicted to influence freshwater quality and quantity, in particular in mountainous and mediterranean regions. Facing these multifaceted threats, society is in need for new approaches to be able to address integrated water resources management.

All course and sections of TWM are divided into nine Modules:

1. Basic Water Ecology (Hydroclimatology, Hydrogeology, Hydraulics)
2. Applied Water Ecology (Ecology, Aquatic Organisms, Water-borne Diseases, Field Trips)
3. Water Engineering (Facility Design, WWT, Flood Management, Governance)
4. Water Basin Management (River and Ecosystem Management, IWRM, Modelling)
5. Sustainability and Wetlands (Ecological Concepts, Biodiversity)
6. Social Environmental Sciences (Economics, Social Sciences, Philosophy)
7. Internship (Project Water Management)
8. Elective-compulsory Optional Courses (Ecology, (Socio-)Economy, Microbiology, Modelling, Sustainable Development, Statistics...)
9. Master Thesis

Zugangsvoraussetzungen

Dutch and German applicants

According to the Equivalence Treaty from 1983 between the Netherlands and Germany, Dutch and German student applicants follow the same application procedure. Dutch and German applicants are fully eligible if they fulfil the following requirements:

- a University degree (B.Sc., M.Sc., Diploma, State Examination ["Staatsexamen"]) in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Water Sciences, Landscape Ecology, Civil Engineering, Water Management, Land Management

Students holding any of the following degrees are eligible, but may need to attend extra courses prior to TWM based on a interview:

- a degree from a University of Professional Education (e.g. B.Sc., M.Sc., "Fachhochschul-Diplom", HBO diploma) in Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Water Sciences, Landscape Ecology, Civil Engineering, Water Management, Land Management

Applicants who do not meet the requirements can issue an admission request to one of the Contact persons at UDE or RU.

If you wish to start in September (winter term), please contact the student advisor for the master Biology at RU. Please note that non-European applicants are charged an application fee of € 75 at RU (Study Fees).

• statement of motivation for studying TWM (maximum length: two pages);
• certificates of the relevant (eligible) academic degree (copy); an English translation prepared by an officially-registered translator will be necessary in case the certificate is not in English, German or Dutch language;
• copies of all transcripts or other academic records that give proof of the undergraduate studies including credits and grades achieved in each single subject; an English translation prepared by an officially-registered translator will be necessary in case the certificate is not in English, German or Dutch language;
• two photographs;
• copy of the passport;
• copy of English language proficiency certificate(s) (see >Language skills);

Admission to TWM

Application period is 01.11.2020 – 15.03.2021.

Non-EU applicants should apply for a Visa, if relevant, in due time. Visa applications might require several months. Be prepared!

Employment prospects

TWM has been developed in cooperation with scientists, managers and policy makers in the field of water (resources) management, representing both in public and private organisations in Germany and the Netherlands. This tight collaboration with practitioners bears a strong career perspective for our graduates.

TWM graduates will be well-educated and have good job opportunities at water authorities, water boards, consultancies, national and international NGOs. TWM provides a sound basis for an academic career too.
