Research Areas

  • Investigation of side chamber flow aerodynamics in radial compressors at application-oriented operating points

  • Optimisation of radial compressor return stages in an extended operating range

Short Description

  • Modern radial compressors operate at very high Reynolds numbers up to 10^9. The objective of this project is to investigate the aerodynamics in radial compressor side chambers at Reynolds numbers up to 10^8. The test rig, which is specifically built for this project and comprises a rotor—stator cavity, enables the investigation of operating points with centripetal and centrifugal through-flow at different cavity widths. Additionally, the flow structure is analysed using computational fluid dynamics.
  • Multi-stage radial compressors are in widespread use in the industry. The return stage design of such compressors contributes significantly to their performance. In this project, the return stage and guide vane of a radial compressor is optimised using a hybrid experimental and numerical approach: Measurements deliver the boundary conditions for a CFD based optimisation. The numerically optimised return guide vane is experimetally investigated to validate its performance.
