ARUS - Application

Admission Requirements

The basic requirement for applying is a degree from a German University or University of Applied Sciences (minimum of German 2.0, “good”, or equivalent) or a comparable degree from a non-German institution of higher education.  Applicants must have a good command of English and/or German.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications for the winter term is 30. April. Please do not apply before February of the respective year.

Submitting Applications

Applications have be submitted via e-mail only (accepted is PDF). All documents should be sent to the contact address provided. Applications submitted by fax cannot be accepted.

Required Application Documents

· Application Form:

Click on the link on this homepage to download the application form. Print, complete and sign the form.

· CV/Resume:

Your CV should be one to two pages long and may include honors, awards, professional qualifications and publications.

· Description of Research Project:

Provide your name and the topic of your research project in the heading. Write a short description of your research project (max. ten pages), which addresses the following:

  1. abstract (250 words)
  2. research objective
  3. research question/s
  4. hypotheses
  5. current state of research/ review of the scientific literature
  6. methodological implementation
  7. current state of preparation

· Certificates/Academic Transcript:

Notarized copy of your university entrance qualification certificate (Abitur, A-Level, etc.). Notarized copy of your Masters Degree (transcript and diploma). A notarized translation (German or English) of transcripts and documents that are not in German or English must be provided in addition to copies of the original documents. The stamps of the certifications must be clearly visible on the copies, which are then sent via email (as a PDF file).

· Letter of Recommendation:

We need a letter of recommendation from your previous academic supervisor. Please contact your chosen supervisor. He/ She should send a letter of recommendation to the contact address via email. A (possible) form can be found on this homepage. Any other form of letter of recommendation will also be accepted.

· English/German Language Certificates:

ARUS is a bilingual program. Applicants need either language skills in English or in German. If you are a native speaker in German or in English you do not need any certificates of your language skills. Nonetheless, a basic working knowledge of German is highly recommended to facilitate everyday communication.

Applicants who are non-native speakers of English need one of the following English language certificates:

  • English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based); for more about TOEFL, click here: www.toefl.org.
  • UNIcert Level 3 - Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, level C - IELTS Band 7.0. For more about IELTS, click here: www.ielts.org.
  • or other comparable accredited certificates

Applicants who are non-native speakers of German need one of the following certificates:

  • TestDAF Level 4, centralized language test of the Goethe Institute (Mittelstufe – intermediate level)
  • C1 (Goethe Institute and telc in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or equivalent

Applicants whose language skills are not fully adequate in terms of the standards established above can take intensive language courses and language courses during the regular term at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Applicants from China

Before you can apply to our program, your documents (certificates, diplomas, transcripts, etc.) must be examined by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS). The original APS certificate must be submitted along with the other application documents.

Admissions

The admissions procedure for doctoral candidates is divided into two phases. The ARUS selection committee makes preliminary selections (according to section three of the Study Regulations) based on the applications submitted. Applicants selected in the first phase will be invited to interviews. Those applicants who cannot be present for the interview in Germany will be interviewed using Skype. Successful applicants’ documents will be sent to the relevant academic faculties/departments to complete the admissions process (in accordance with Section 6, Paragraph 4 of the regulations for doctoral students).
