Welcome to the ISMT homepage

ISMT becomes INAM!

For several decades, the Institute of Ship Technology, Ocean Engineering and Transport Systems (ISMT) at the University of Duisburg-Essen have been educating young engineers in mechanical engineering, specializing in ship and offshore technology. Furthermore, the ISMT is one of the strongest research institutes worldwide in the field of ship and offshore technology. Covering both applied and basic research, we focus is on the sustainability of maritime systems and the automation of ships. Our research results are directly incorporated into teaching.

Now it is time to rename the institute to better reflect our research activities. Therefore, the Institute of Marine Technology, Ocean Engineering and Transport Systems will be renamed the Institute ofSustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems (INAM). The new website is currently being created at www.uni-due.de/inam. We are pleased to present the logo of the Institute of Sustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems.

The websites of the following conferences are already available.

Study Courses

The chair aims to provide students with a profound knowledge in the fields of ship and offshore technology (German or English language). The academic curriculum of Mechanical Engineering with emphasis on “Ship and Offshore Technology” within the department “Mechanical and Process Engineering” of the Faculty of Engineering is based on internationally accredited “Bachelor of Science” and “Master of Science” programmes. The core areas of teaching are hydrodynamics and ship design, marine power plants as well as the structural design and analysis of ships and offshore structures.

Research Focus

In research, the institute particularly concentrates on the fields of numerical and experimental hydrodynamics as well as fluid-structure interaction. Investigations are also made in the field of ship and offshore technology. At the institute’s own laboratories, experimental tests are conducted to determine the behaviour of multi-phase fluids (sloshing, slamming, cavitation etc.). Moreover, numerical simulations in the maritime context are carried out (wave-induced motions and loads, propulsion, manoeuvring, fluid-structure interaction etc.).
