Especially since she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993, Toni Morrison has been one of the most influential contemporary American authors. In this class we will take a look at four of her novels - both early and recent - and examine Morrison's project of re-writing and fictionalizing (African-)American history from the perspective of a black woman. We will discuss how statements that Morrison made in interviews and essays relate to her fiction and how particular aesthetic and narrative devices contribute to her project.

Students are asked to purchase their own copies of Toni Morrison's novels

  • The Bluest Eye,
  • Song of Solomon,
  • Beloved, and
  • A Mercy.

These four novels will be available at the campus bookstore.

In addition to the four above-mentioned novels, we will read and discuss essays, interviews, Morrison's Nobel Prize acceptance speech, and secondary material, all of which will be collected in a reader, available from the copy shop at Reckhammerweg 4 after the first class meeting.
