This seminar will be concerned with the almost 330 year-long history of Germans in North America. We will be looking at the migration from Germany to the New World and at the establishment of German settlements there, observing what happened to the linguistic and cultural practices that Germans had brought with them. After considering the experiences of German immigrants in America the focus will be on the construction of Germany and views of Germans in U.S. literature, film, television, popular culture, and politics.
