Learning Efficiency of Complex Illustrations in Organic Chemistry

The effects of multimedia instructional materials on learning and knowledge acquisition have been of increasing interest in educational sciences within the latest decades. Theories such as the Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), or the Integrated model of text and picture comprehension provide an extensive research base. However, up to now, only few studies have been conducted in university-level educational contexts, especially with regard to science education.
