Study Program Logistics Engineering

A study with future

Dear prospective student,

We are pleased that you want to catch up on our new study offer in the field of Logistics and Traffic at the University of Duisburg-Essen. These pages offer a first opportunity.

Two faculties of our university, the faculty for Engineering science and the faculty for economic science, especially our professorships, got involved with the development of these studies. We have seized many suggestions and requirements of corporate practice and science and have integrated a new study concept.

A first result of this development work are studies which didnt exist in Germany up to now. On the one hand we offer a precise orientation with economical or engineering science relation, but also integrate those in each case different branch of study into the curriculum. With their qualification alumni meet the demand for a precise qualification profile as well as they have multidisciplinary knowledge and abilities which are especially required in the field of logistics and traffic.

With both four semester lasting master studies starting in winter semester 2003/2004 our alumni will get degrees which are internationally accepted and will nationally gain in importance.

Let convince yourself from the first information on this page and contact us for further advice. Maybe you will begin your study of logistics and traffic in Duisburg soon.

With the best wishes for your future.

Logistics

Symbol Quadrat Tasks, trends and requirements on skilled employees and managers and logistics
Symbol Quadrat Demand for new directions of study in the field of logistics and traffic

As a result of constantly increasing requirements of the markets the volume of tasks of logistics and traffic is subjected to strong changes. Production networks, just in time production, globalized buying markets, e-business, only to call some catchwords, pose a challenge at the design of material, goods and information flows between enterprises as well as to the customers. Thereby logistics and traffic as an operational cross section function get a competition decisive relevance. As a result industry, trading and service enterprises are required to design an appropriate logistics and traffic competence.

Highly qualified skilled employees and managers suitable for conceptual tasks in the field of logistics and traffic are more than ever in demand. Because of the described developments an interdisciplinary and international orientation is necessary that comprises profound knowledge in business management and technical details – supplemented with traffic/geographical related knowledge as well as abilities in the field of information and communication technologies.

The classical university education within the field of logistics and traffic doesn’t meet the requirements. In this respect the University of Duisburg-Essen, campus Duisburg, allows for the requirements of corporate practice with two new study offers which are specially tailored on logistics and traffic. For students with a first profession qualifying degree, e.g. bachelor study or diploma of a university of applied sciences, an orientation in economic and engineering science is alternatively available.

In ultra-modern logistic labs logistic chains are built, distribution concepts are developed and Supply Chain Management structures are optimized. For this reason innovative methods such as simulation technique, business games and video technique are used and tested in connection with interesting industrial projects. Within the scope of research projects the possibility of getting to know latest techniques and technologies arises in order to take part in the milestone of future in the field of scheduling, turnover techniques and traffic engineering.

Symbol Qudrat A short description to the master study Logistics Engineering:

The international oriented master study gives a substantiated and practical insight in logistics and its effects on traffic. Alumni will be offered an interdisciplinary study. It contains an engineering focal point and it is faculty comprehensive embedded in a wide field. The subjects are from diverse disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, information technology, communication technique, economic science, construction engineering, physics, geography and social sciences.

In the master study Logistics Engineering the following focal points are treated:

The master study is also suitable for alumni of many other bachelor studies, e.g.

industrial engineer, industrial engineering, product engineering, mechanical engineering etc. It sets up on the bachelor studies and extends the perspective on logistics and traffic aspects. In view of geography also structural site-related relations are described. The focal point of the master study addresses to international oriented students who do not only see their field in single congested urban areas but want to solve tasks with a profound knowledge of global coherences of logistics and traffic. Main topics are especially the planning and the operation of logistic systems, factories and traffic systems.

The apprenticeship which is close to industry and projects ensures that current topics, as e.g. from the field of Supply Chain Management or Manufacturing Execution Systems, are directly introduced into the lecture. Modern methods like simulation technique or techniques from the Virtual Factory are applied. Different software packages as well as ultra-modern labs are available. Structural coherences are experienced in business games.

Approximately 50 % of the subjects will be offered in English language so that alumni can find their way in professional life with its internationally common vocabulary of concepts and thus are predestinated for the assignment in cross national projects.
