The founder and long-term head of the Essener Kolleg für Geschlechterforschung died suddenly on 17 February 2009.

On 22 October 2009, an interdisciplinary symposium was held to honor her life and work: „Tempus fugit – Gender bliebt“. It took place at the University’s Glaspavillon in Essen, starting 10 am.

Dr. Sibylle Plogstedt

A Life Full of New Beginnings "Himmelhochjauchzend..."

Publicists Dr. Sibylle Plogstedt, a close friend of Doris Janshen’s, looked back on the professor’s eventful life, focusing on her years in Berlin at Technical University, and on her time as a professor at Essen University, where she founded the Essen College of Gender Studies.

The audience was moved by her speech, because Sibylle Plogstedt portrayed the achievements and challenges of  Prof. Janshen’s scientific career in a lively and personal way. Sibylle Plogstedt and Doris Janshen had worked together on the project "The Social Situation of Former Prisoners of Conscience in the GDR with Regard to Gender Aspects".

 

Prof. Dr. Michael Meuser

Women's Studies - Men's Studies - Gender Studies

Prof. Dr. Anne Schlüter (Institute of Educational Sciences, University Duisburg Essen) illustrated the situation of men and women working in the field of education. She is a member of the College’s executive committee.

The last lecture in the morning was Prof. Dr. Michael Meuser’s „Masculinities in Motion. Hegemonial Masculinity and Structural Changes in Employment“. He is a Professor at the Institute of Educational Sciences and Sociology, Technical University of Dortmund. Prof. Meuser also has worked at the Essen College of Gender Studies for many years. Together with Doris Janshen he edited the College’s series of publications. His article “Männerwelten. Zur kollektiven Konstruktion hegemonialer Männlichkeit“ was published in that series.

After lunch, the guests enjoyed the music of Jazz cellist Daniel Brandl . He also took the photos you see on this page.

Gender Studies in Medical Disciplines

In the afternoon, the audience listened to excellent lectures on aspects of sex and gender, given by scientists form different medical disciplines.

  • PD Dr. Vera John-Mikolajewski (Institute of Radiology, Universitätsklinikum Essen) gave a lecture on „The Development of the Gender Perspective in Medicine“. She has been deputy head of the Essen College of Gender Studies for many years.
  • PD Dr. Andrea Kindler-Röhrborn (Institute of Pathology and Neuropathology, Universitätsklinikum Essen) illustrated „The impact of sex and gender in complex genetic illnesses“. She is a member of College’s executive committee and currently works on a project concerned with the implementation of the gender perspective in medicine. This project was initiated by Doris Janshen.
  • Prof. Dr. Dieter Bingmann (Institute of Physiology, Universitätsklinikum Essen) explained the phenomenon of synesthesia in his lecture „A Network of Senses“. Together with Doris Janshen he did research on synesthesia and worked on the lecture performance „Mind Dancing – A Meeting of Arts and Sciences“
  • Prof. Dr. Dr. Bettina Pfleiderer (Institute of Clinical Radiology, Münster University) gave a lecture on „Cognition and Gender“. In 2003 she was awarded the Maria Sibylla Merian Prize.These lectures were held in honor of Doris Janshen’s commitment to Socio-Medical Gender Studies. Early in her career, Prof. Janshen was already dedicated to introducing sex and gender to medical disciplines and research. Andrea Kindler-Röhborn’s approach showed the progress being made concerning this problem.

Dr. Gudrun Schäfer (Institute of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, University of Paderborn) hosted a discussion in which Prof. Prof. Violeta Dinescu (Composition, Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg) Ingrid Fitzek (Gleichstellungsbeauftrage der University Duisburg-Essen), Dr. Beate Kortendiek (Coordinator of the Network of Women’s Studies in NRW, Technical University of Dortmund), Prof. Dr. Britta Schinzel (Institute of Computer Sciences and Society, University of Freiburg) and Dr. Uta C. Schmidt (Institute of Educational Sciences, University Duisburg-Essen) reflected on the past, present and future developments of Women’s and Gender Studies.
