The EMAE is a Master degree study programme which has been jointly developed
by a network of currently eight universities from seven European countries:
- Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany (coordinator)
- Ostravská Univerzita, Czech Republic
- Danmarks Pædagogiske Universitet, Denmark
- Helsingin Yliopisto, Finland
- Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Germany
- Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy
- Universitatea de Vest din Timisoara, Romania
- Universitat de Barcelona, Spain
In winter semester 2006/07 this study programme will start in different extent
in four partner universities. University Duisburg-Essen will offer all courses
of the first semester. We plan to accept these courses when we officially
start the programme. At the University Duisburg-Essen you can enrol firstly
when we have finished the accreditation process. We plan the first enrolments
in winter semester 2007/08. Therefore students need a first academic degree
(first cycle).
Aims and Graduate’s Profile
The aim of the EMAE programme is to qualify its students for professional work
in European contexts in the field of adult education and learning. The students
will acquire the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills enabling them
to act in specific areas of professional practice in this field. They will acquire
the necessary cultural-reflexive skills to act in an intercultural context.
They will become aware of the opportunities that Europe offers as a potential
labour market to adult educators, and will be able to use these opportunities.
EMAE graduates will work in a variety of jobs that are directed towards enhancing
the learning of adults in Europe. EMAE graduates will typically engage in careers
as researchers, administrators, counsellors, instructors, and programme planners.
Curriculum
The EMAE-Network has developed a curriculum which intends a Master-Programme
within four semesters and 120 ECTS. The EMAE will be offered by universities
through a combination of courses of the common core and individual courses:
• Common
Core (70 ECTS) : These courses will be offered in each university in English.
Almost all courses will be offered as international Online-Study-Units.
• Individual Courses (50 ECTS): These courses will be offered by each
partner university regarding their main stress of research. The courses will
be mainly offered in the national lan-guages of each partner university. At
the University Duisburg-Essen the individual courses will be offered mainly
on campus.
Through the combination of these both curriculum parts each university develops
an own curriculum
structure. At University Duisburg-Essen the curriculum structure is near
to the national Master in Adult and Continuing Education.
Admission Requirements
Entrants must hold a degree equivalent to a B.A. In addition entrants must have
at least a basic knowledge of education. This basic knowledge of education may
be obtained in different ways – through a relevant B.A. degree programme,
through work experience, or through supplementary studies.
Candidates must be proficient in English (B1) and must possess good computer
and internet skills.
At the University Duisburg-Essen students in the main studies of the study programme
can earn certificates (Leistungsnachweis) in marked courses. We plan to accept
these courses when we start the official programme in winter semester 2007/08.
Student Mobility
The EMAE programme may be studied entirely at one university. However, students
are strongly ad-vised to spend at least one semester (3. semester) at another
university of the EMAE consortium. Student mobility is facilitated by a network
agreement which regulates the mutual recognition of courses within the EMAE
partner consortium. Furthermore students can be supported through the Erasmus-Programme.
Degree awarded
On successful completion of the programme students will be awarded the degree
“Master of Arts” from their home university. In the Diploma Supplement
it will be documented that the studies undertaken by the student correspond
to the standards that have been agreed by the EMAE network and that the degree
represents therefore a “European Master in Adult Education”.
