Master of Science in Mathematics, Universität Duisburg-Essen
Master of Science in Mathematics
The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Duisburg-Essen offers a Master Programme leading to the degree Master of Science (M.Sc.). The programme has been accredited by the agency ASIIN until 2013. Particularly qualified students may continue their studies on the PhD level after the Master Programme.
The duration of the Master Programme is 2 years, i.e. 4 terms (semesters). During the studies 120 ECTS points (Cr) must be accumulated during the course of the programme. The programme can be started either in the winter term (i.e. in October) or in the summer term (i.e. in April). The University of Duisburg-Essen has two campi, one in Duisburg and one in Essen. Courses can be attended on both campi. For most specialisations, the required courses are all located at one of the two campi.
Study Plan
One of the Master Programme's features is that the students have a great deal of freedom in their choice of lectures. There are no compulsory lectures at all, just minimum credit numbers in certain categories. A typical course of study in the Master Programme has an 80:20 profile (mathematics:minor subject) and looks as follows. The course of study consist of
- 39-45 Cr from mathematics courses (so-called specialisation modules (in German: Vertiefungsmodule)), which belong to the Master Programme; usually, these are lectures accompanied by problem sessions or reading courses; they can be freely chosen from the offered lectures;
- 9 Cr from a Master seminar;
- 21 Cr from a specialisation block in the area of the Master thesis; this block is usually chosen following the advice of the professor who will be the advisor for the Master thesis;
- 15-21 Cr from a minor subject;
- 30 Cr from the master thesis (duration: 6 months).

The programmes Technological Mathematics and Business Mathematics have 60:40 profiles. Under certain conditions, a 100:0 profile is also possible. For details, please refer to the summary page of the ABZ (in German) and the examination regulations. If you have any questions, please contact any of the study advisors.
Courses
The courses of the Master Programme are described in the Manual of Modules (in German: Modulhandbuch) in the category Specialisation Modules (in German: Vertiefungsmodule). Under Role in the Curriculum (in German: Zuordnung zum Curriculum) one finds which specialisation modules belong to the Master Programme (the others belong to the Bachelor Programme). Please note that not all of the described courses are offered each year. The lectures which are currently given can be found in the electronic directory of lectures LSF. Please find important information on the lectures that are regularly given as well as information on the teaching language below by clicking on the possible specialisations.

Admission
The standard condition to be fulfilled for admission is a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics or an equivalent degree which was obtained with a final mark of at least 3.0 (in the German system, corresponding roughly to a C). For equivalences please contact the study advisors or the International Office. On the pages of the international office you also find information on the application procedure. Please do not hesitate to contact the study advisors or the international office with any questions.
