Student Thesis Projects
Bachelor's Thesis / Master's Thesis / Research InternshipStable anion exchange membranes for fuel cells and electrolyzers
Anion exchange membranes are a promising route to cost-effective electrochemical energy conversion. Proton exchange membrane devices commonly rely on scarce and expensive noble metal catalysts such as platinum and iridium, which limit scalability. Anion exchange platforms operate in alkaline media and can employ catalysts based on abundant metals, which offers a credible path to lower cost.
The technology is still immature, and the central challenge is membrane and ionomer stability under alkaline conditions, elevated temperature, and humidity cycling.
The objective is to design and fabricate an anion exchange membrane with robust long-term stability under relevant operating conditions. The work focuses on chemical, mechanical, and electrochemical durability as the primary performance target.
