A short description

The Institute for Experimental Mathematics (IEM) is a central scientific organisation of the University Duisburg-Essen.

It was founded in 1989 with the help of the Volkswagen-foundation in order to enable mathematicians, computer and networking experts to work together in a field-overlapping collaboration under one roof. On 01.01.1999 the IEM was extended by the professorial chair "Technik der Rechnernetze" (Computer Networking Technology group) which was funded by the Alfried Krupp Bohlen and Halbach Foundation. Together with this chair the IEM hosts 2 chairs in mathematics and 2 chairs in engineering. The regular exchange of exprerience and information stimulates the research in the following fields of science:

This is documentated in numerous research projects and publications realized by the approx. 35 members of the IEM.

The main task of the IEM is to strengthen the interaction between mathematics, computer science and engineering. This involves the following tasks:

  • Basic research in Discrete Mathematics, Number theory, algebraical und technical Coding theory;
  • Improvement of the applicabilities of computers in the mathematical research by developping algorithms and efficient software;
  • Development of mathematical methods for data transfer and security in theory and practice

Due to an extensive guests programme and regularly organized international workshops the IEM has contacts to researchers around the world.

One of the most important tasks of the IEM is the training of the Master and PhD students. The courses, practical studies and the contacts to the leading scientists and institutes at home and abroad offer a complete picture of modern developments in the field of experimental mathematics and the relevant relations to the problems of data transfer and security. Cooperation with industry helps to complete this task.

The efforts of the IEM are supported by a scientific advisory board, consisting of mathematicians and engineers.
