Participants are expected to cover their travel, accomodation and living expenses through the ERASMUS+ staff mobility funds or otherwise.

Transport

Arriving by plane

Düsseldorf Aiport

Most people travelling by plane will arrive at Düsseldorf Airport. The airport in Düsseldorf has its own train station from which you can travel directly to the Essen main train station (Hbf). After arrival at the airport, a shuttle service, the ‘SkyTrain’, takes you directly to the train station.

Cologne-Bonn Airport

The airport in Cologne-Bonn also has direct access to trains (Deutsche Bahn, DB). An overview of train schedules is available in the Internet:  Deutsche Bahn

The main train station in Essen is best reached with an Intercity (IC) or  Intercity-Express (ICE) from the main train station in Cologne. The trip takes about an hour and costs about 25 euros.

More Airports

There are also smaller airports (just servicing budget airlines) within travel distance: Airport Weeze (also called Düsseldorf-Weeze, but watch out: Weeze is actually not close to Düsseldorf at all but miles away) and Dortmund Airport. A further option, especially for transatlantic flights, is Frankfurt Airport (Germany's busiest Airport, serving as the main hub for Lufthansa).

Arriving by train

Rail transportation can easily be planned via the Internet. Essen main station is served by the rail networks IC/EC and ICE. The German Railway (Deutsche Bahn) provides comprehensive travel information at » www.bahn.de.

The excellent public transportation in the Ruhr Area is provided by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR: ‘The Rhine-Ruhr Public Transportation Union’). Current schedule information can readily be accessed at » www.vrr.de. Information on pubic transportation systems and their services is provided at » http://ruhrpilot.de.
