4. August 2017EU-Japan project RAPID5G introduces 5G to the public

Recently, the RAPID5G project (www.rapid-5g.eu) provided the first live public demonstration of its 60 GHz 5G technology.

One of the key use cases of the next, or 5th, mobile generation is enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), driven by the ever-increasing use of consumer mobile data. The RAPID5G consortium has identified the key performance indicators needed to support eMBB and provide best user experience and highest data rates in congested areas.

On July 12, RAPID5G demonstrated its new 5G technology for the first time in a public space under real-world conditions. RAPID5G's evolved mobile environment enables interoperability between heterogeneous mobile technologies such as LTE, WiFi and 60 GHz 5G. In doing so, all mobile technologies are supported by a centralized fiber optic fronthaul network. In addition to eMBB, the RAPID5G system also supports "hot spot" operating cases that allow users in dense areas to download multimedia content or provide wireless connectivity, e.g. For virtual reality (VR) glasses.
