Rhine Ruhr 2025

The flame relay in the four host cities of Duisburg, Essen, Bochum, and Mülheim is one of the first highlights in the countdown to the upcoming Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. It stands for unity and solidarity in sport—and shows how the same passion and determination that drives us in our studies and in competition transcends boundaries and builds bridges between cultures. As a unifying event, it creates an unforgettable experience for the academic community and international university sports alike.

The UDE is also part of this special event and, as an official partner university of the games, we are particularly looking forward to welcoming the Flame of Knowledge to our two campuses in Duisburg and Essen. We warmly invite you to join us in experiencing these special moments.

On May 23, 2025, the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games torch will come to the Essen campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen. In cooperation with the Helmholtz-Gymnasium, the flame will run through Essen's city center - from the Stadtgarten via central locations such as the Funke media house to our main campus. The flame relay reaches the campus at around 1:30 p.m. and is ceremoniously welcomed there. Accompanied by music, activities and a welcome from the Rectorate, a lively campus festival is created around the international sporting event. Afterwards, the torch will move on to Essen City Hall, where the run will end for the day.

Just a few days later, on May 28, 2025, the flame relay will also make a stop in Duisburg. From 09:00, the torch will be carried across the Duisburg campus - accompanied by music and torchbearers from the university. The finish line is the forecourt of the LX building, where a short reception is planned. The campus run is part of a longer route through the city, which also includes schools and the town hall. The stop at the UDE is therefore an important prelude to the Duisburg section of the route - all in the spirit of encounters, movement and anticipation of the Games.

The University of Duisburg-Essen is hosting the German University Championships (DHM) in athletics this year. On May 29, 2025, numerous students will be competing to win titles and medals at the Bezirkssportanlage Wedau III in the Sportpark Wedau in Duisburg.
Especially interesting: the DHM also serves as a qualifying competition for the FISU World University Games. Fittingly, the torch of the games will make a short stop in the stadium on this day, bringing the special atmosphere of the international competitions to Duisburg.
