History of the group
The very, very beginning......
The structural chemistry group at the University of Essen started in 1978/79 with the purchase of a Syntex R3 - fourcircle diffractometer for - at that time not - routine crystal structure analyses. In a small room Dieter Bläser und Roland Boese solved crystal structures in the field of boron chemistry for the group of Prof. Schmid.

In the course of time the method became faster and the interest in crystal structures of Prof. Schmid's group was reduced due to their increasing interest in non-crystallising clusters. Thus Roland Boese could concentrated on his own work and establish a working group which has an internationally acknowleged expertise in crystallisation techniques in various fields. Meanwhile the instrumentation also changed (see also page "Equipment").
