In rolling technology, there is a high demand for wear and corrosion restistant ceramic tools and other components, which additionally can can stand high thermal and mechanical loadings. The focal point of this research project is the ressource efficient utilization of ceramic rolling tools in multiple roll stands.

It it is possible to increase the lifetime of work rolls, productivity increases and quality improvements of the rolled products are possible.

The use of higher-performance work rolls made of ceramic materials thus means a significant contribution to strengthening the innovative power of companies, which is essential for maintaining competitiveness and jobs.

The further aims of this project are:

  • Demonstration of the functional capability of ceramic rolls in the 20-roll stands and presentation of the feasibility for further applications in the area of multi-roll stands.
  • Increasing the service life of ceramic work rolls by a factor of 3 compared to steel rolls.
  • Process optimization to adapt production conditions in order to achieve first-class product quality with the lowest possible material and energy input
  • Development of a reliable rolling model for metal foil rolling with ceramic rolls on the 20-roll Sendzimir stands based on the specified operating parameters and the rolled materials.

As part of the project, we developed a foil rolling model with non-cylindrical roll flattening for foil rolling, which was used to exploit the advantages of ceramic roll materials for the design of pass schedules.
