Effective research today is hardly conceivable without appropriate IT solutions. But it’s easy to lose focus facing the wide range of products on the market. We see it as our mission to support you in choosing the right tools and hardware for the job.
The goal of the eScience Team is to bundle the existing ZIM portfolio and to extend it in such a way that both software and the corresponding infrastructure are available quickly, securely and precisely. Collaborative work in interdisciplinary, cross-location research networks is raised by web applications and Cloud solutions to a new level of quality.
Your independence is important to us! That is why we rely on a combination of central standard solutions and either individual in-house developments or the enhancement of existing products, which we design and implement together with researchers.

Our services
Project support
At the start or right in the middle: we are at your side with our expertise. Whether you need to select software in the application phase, plan in-house developments or have questions during your project: we will find a solution for you. Together with the RDS (Research Data Services), the SSC (Science Support Center) and the CCSS (Center for Computational Sciences and Simulation) we offer you a secure IT foundation so that you can focus on your research.
Scientific computing
To bring your research to its goal, strong computing power is essential. The HPC team, consisting of experts in programming, parallelization, numerics and high-performance computing, supports you in all questions concerning scientific computing. The close integration in ZIM enables a close-knit consulting network and thus ensures a better service for you and your project.
Infrastructure
All researchers can set up their virtual research environment in VMs (Virtual Machines) provided by the ZIM and run their own services there, use the cloud solution Sciebo for collaboration or our data storage for their research. From the classic network folder, over object storage for large data volumes, up to Sync&Share solutions. Whatever your storage needs are, we make it happen.
Research tools
Whether open source or commercial software, you are often faced with a multitude of possibilities and yet you can't find the right one for your own needs. We already have numerous products in our portfolio and would be happy to help you with your request. New solutions are constantly evaluated and tested by us in order to provide professional support for researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
HPC Consultation Hour
The team "Scientific Computing" from the eScience department has established an open HPC consultation hour as a new consulting service.
Every two weeks, on Wednesdays from 11 a.m., the entire team of experts is available in the digital meeting room to answer researchers' questions/problems/wishes or to provide initial assistance. The team can also draw on the North Rhine-Westphalian Competence Network for High Performance Computing (HPC.NRW), which is funded by the Digitale Hochschule NRW grant and provides a comprehensive range of support.

Cooperation
In order to find the best solutions for you, we work closely with the university's existing networks. In the RDS (Research Data Services), together with the UB (University Library) and the SSC (Science Support Center) and CCSS (Center for Computational Sciences and Simulation), we face the new challenges of quality, sustainability and reproducibility that the new opportunities present.
Supported by the eScience Infrastructure team, whose computing power and storage capacity form the basis for simulations, data processing and visualizations, we are enabling new opportunities for research. Currently, the Object Store, which was acquired in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University and UA Ruhr, deserves special mention. This jointly used, distributed storage network is intended to improve research data management and thus scientific practice.
