The foundation was set up in 1990 by Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Bruno Werdelmann, a former member of the executive board at Henkel, Düsseldorf.

The foundation supports doctoral research positions for outstanding young scientists at the Faculty of Chemistry. The foundation also funds the Bruno Werdelmann lectures that take place annually at the Faculty of Chemistry, for which renowned chemists have been recruited in the past.
