The study in the program "International Studies in Engineering" (ISE) contains several Bachelor degree courses with a common structure for all disciplines in engineering sciences at the University Duisburg-Essen. The first year of studies in the Bachelor program is identical for most of the degree course offers. During the 1st year, the language of instruction for all Bachelor degree courses is 100% English. The overall language of instruction for each Bachelor degree course is 50% English and 50% German.
Most of the Bachelor degree courses in the ISE program follow the same basic structure as given in the figure below. The following Bachelor degree courses are offered:
As a result of the common 1st year, the students have the chance to discover possible options and determine their preferences. The students can decide on their orientation after the second semester of their studies.
Within the project the students will work with scientific methods in a group on a complex topic. At the end of the project the students will write a documentation and present their results.
The elective should give the students the possibility of choosing and deepening their own profile of the degree.
During their bachelor studies the students have to make an industrial internship in a company outside the university. The industrial internship has to be finished before registering for the bachelor thesis. The industrial internship will supplement the degree in a way that the students will add to their theoretical knowledge some practical experiences. This will help to understand the lectures and to working on the exercises. The duration of the industrial internship is 15 weeks, where 9 weeks of this industrial internship should be done before the studies.
The aim of the non-technical course offer is to deepen the general education of the students and if necessary to increase the linguistic competence as well as to strengthen the ability of working in teams or giving a presentation.
The bachelor thesis is an examination paper which concludes the scientific education in every bachelor degree course within the academic program ISE. It is used to show that a student is capable of processing a problem from the corresponding field of engineering sciences autonomously and with scientific methods and presenting it comprehensibly, within a given period of time. The duration of the bachelor thesis is 3 month.
After completion of the bachelor degree, the students can choose between a disciplinary continuation with a master as a specialization of their former field of studies or changing to a master degree program in a different engineering subject aiming at a double qualification.
