New Simulation Framework Improves Prediction of Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Formation in Spray Flames
Researchers investigated the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles in turbulent spray flames using a novel simulation framework that combines Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), a transported Lagrangian Filtered Density Function (FDF) method, and a sectional particle model. Applied to the SpraySyn system, the approach was used to compare different turbulent mixing models and their impact on nanoparticle formation. The simulations showed that accounting for subgrid-scale turbulence effects leads to broader and more realistic particle size distributions than traditional Eulerian methods. The results highlight the importance of capturing small-scale mixing heterogeneities to improve predictions of nanoparticle growth and synthesis in spray flame reactors.
