The Effects of Economic Sanctions

In a new article published by the journal "Defence and Peace Economics", Manfred Lenzen and Tobias Debiel develop a quantitative model for estimating the economic effects of sanctions.

The model is applied to two scenarios: the Russia–Ukraine war and a possible conflict across the Taiwan Strait. Among other things, the authors find that the use of sanctions as an instrument of Western politics has severe limitations as sanctions, especially against Mainland China, can be costly and painful for the sending states.
