The "Arbeitsstelle interreligiöses Lernen" (AiL) addresses the pedagogical and theological challenges that arise from the increasing religious and cultural pluralisation of today's society, especially in metropolitan areas such as the Ruhr region, and which are evident in schools and everyday life.
The AiL aims to promote and further develop the concern for interreligious learning and dialogue in university teacher training, but also in local schools and in social discourse.

The AiL is affiliated with the Chair of Religious Education in the Institute of Protestant Theology at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The AiL is a forum and coordination point for dialogue-related interreligious events. In order to promote interreligious competences within teacher training, seminars are held at the university in the field of interreligious and intercultural education and various religious communities are visited as places of extracurricular learning.
In addition, the AiL conducts science-related events in the field of dialogue and interreligious learning, to which speakers from religious communities and universities are invited. Symposia and study days are also offered regularly. Lecture series open up the possibility of exploring topics in the field of religion, culture and education from an interdisciplinary perspective.

In research projects, the focus is on religious education under the conditions of social, cultural and religious heterogeneity, both nationally and internationally. One question is how the opportunity for dialogical, interreligious learning can be used in pedagogical settings characterised by religious diversity. Empirical methods of research on religion and teaching are predominantly applied.

AiL is in close contact with schools in the Duisburg and Essen region, the local religious communities and other institutions of interreligious, intercultural learning.
