Curriculum Vitae

Postdoctoral Researchers

Dr. Marco Saccone

Marco Saccone was born in Palermo, Italy where he studied chemistry at bachelor and masters level. He obtained his PhD in “Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering” from the Polytechnic University of Milano, “Politecnico di Milano” in 2014, studying materials for optoelectronics application assembled through halogen bonding. After two postdoctoral research appointments in Finland (Aalto University, Helsinki and Tampere University of Technology, Tampere), he recently joined the research group of Jun.-Prof. Dr. Michael Giese at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His research interests cover specific non-covalent interactions, soft materials, fluorine chemistry and crystal engineering.

PhD Students

Dipl.-Ing. Michael Pfletscher

Since he had discovered science in his younger years, Michael decided to study chemistry (2008-2012) with the main focus on organic chemistry. During his diploma work at Boehringer Ingelheim RCV GmbH & Co KG in Vienna, he already dealt with the synthesis and investigation of the structure-activity relationships (SAP) of antitumor active pyrimidine derivatives, before he continued his work at the Julius-Maximilians University in Würzburg (2012-2014) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Gerhard Bringmann on the basis of antimalarial and antileishmanial active binaphthyl compounds. After this step Michael moved for his Ph.D. work into the field Materials Science where he is working on subtle changes in supramolecular liquid crystalline systems.

M. Sc. Matthias Spengler

Matthias grew up in Feldhausen, a small one-horse town in the northern part of the Ruhr District. He completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry under supervision of Prof. Dr. Carsten Schmuck at the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2014 and continued with his Master’s Degree straightaway. After finishing his Master’s Thesis at the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, under supervision of Jun. Prof. Dr. Michael Giese and Prof. Mark MacLachlan, he joined the Giese Group for his PhD in October 2016. He’s currently working on halogen-bonded supramolecular liquid crystals and the development of thermochromic composite materials using mesoporous organosilica. When not in the lab, he enjoys skiing, sailing, playing volleyball, cooking, and having a drink with friends.

Bachelor Students

Bachelor Student Hoang-Viet Nguyen

Everyone simply calls him Viet. He grew up in Germany and has a Vietnamese migratory backround. He enjoys to hang out with his friends or spends time with his family. Since 2014 he has started to study chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Through the basic internship of organic chemistry he developed more interest in the area organic chemistry and has joined the working group of Giese. Under the supervision of Dipl.-Ing. Michael Pfletscher, he is currently investigating the structural characteristics of asymmetric supramolecular liquid crystals.

Lab Technichans

Lab Technician Christian Müller

Christian grew up in Essen.  Ever since he attended the advanced chemistry course at junior high, his interest in Science and the miracles of Chemistry grew bigger and bigger. So he decided to start an apprenticeship as a laboratory assistant and is now part of the Giese Group since the beginning of September.
