TRR 332 – Neutrophils: Origin, Fate and Function with TRR 332 Integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) “NeutroTrain"
The Transregional Research Centre TRR 332 is a DFG-funded consortium dedicated to develop an improved understanding of neutrophil biology. TRR 332 studies center on revealing the mechanisms of how the tissue environment regulates neutrophil production and phenotypes, how neutrophil activity is controlled intracellularly and how neutrophils function in different disease contexts. In the second funding period foundational work towards disease models with relevance for human pathology will be advanced. The special focus is on three disease entities with great socioeconomic burden and relevance to neutrophil biology, namely vascular inflammation, cancer, and infection. Such an approach not only reveals important aspects of the fine-tuned regulatory mechanisms of neutrophil activation but also permits the generation of tailored intervention strategies.
NeutroTrain is the Integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) of the DFG-funded transregional Research Centre TRR 332 and provides a structured, interdisciplinary doctoral training programme in neutrophil biology, inflammation and innate immunity. Bringing together natural science and medical (MD) doctoral researchers across all partner institutions, NeutroTrain offers an outstanding research and training environment that combines scientific excellence with interdisciplinary collaboration and career development.
The curriculum integrates theoretical education with hands-on training in specialized methodologies to investigate neutrophil biology, including advanced genetic mouse models, multi-omics technologies, bioinformatics, and cutting-edge in vivo and in vitro imaging. Scientific qualification is complemented by laboratory rotations, lecture series, annual retreats, and transferable skills courses covering communication, leadership, research integrity, and career development. Individual Thesis Advisory Committees ensure continuous mentoring and scientific guidance throughout the doctoral project.
By connecting doctoral researchers across the transregional TRR 332 sites, NeutroTrain promotes collaboration, scientific exchange, and the development of a strong network at an early stage of the scientific career. The programme equips its doctoral researchers with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives required to become the next experts in neutrophil biology.
