ASPE - Digital Workbench for Collaborative Exam Creation

Evidence-Based Diagnostics for the Workplace 4.0

How the simulation-based assessment “Globetrader GmbH” ensures the ecological validity of business exams—and makes the dual system sustainable for the future in e-commerce.

Why digital assessments? An (international) domain perspective

The transformation of business processes in e-commerce is shifting professional requirements: away from simple operational execution and toward data-driven, strategic management. Analog paper-based exams cannot capture these dynamic competencies—the disconnect between the fully digitized workplace and traditional testing methods undermines the validity of the assessments. International frameworks demonstrate that the practical skills required globally necessitate modern assessment methods.

Key message: Digital assessments are indispensable, as the commercial job profile has been transformed by changing work processes. Static paper-based exams fall short here. Only authentic simulations can validly assess modern problem-solving skills and thus ensure the international compatibility of vocational education.

What does the digital assessment look like? The “Globetrader GmbH” Assessment Environment - Beyond Substitution

The exam simulates the real-world ecosystem of the omnichannel retailer “Globetrader GmbH” through three interconnected modules: a customer front end (online store), an internal operations backend (ERP system and KPI dashboards) for operational process management, and an optional in-store view via high-fidelity video for physical customer interactions. Technically, this immersive and accessible testing environment for measuring professional competencies is implemented using the professional authoring tool CBA ItemBuilder.

Key message: The “Globetrader GmbH” simulation environment moves away from fragmented tasks in favor of a fully integrated digital workspace. It challenges candidates to manage complex management processes and real-world customer interactions seamlessly within a holistic, authentic context.

What effects are being achieved? The Effects of Digitalization in Detail

The digitization of testing in e-commerce generates three measurable effects: The authenticity effect replaces text-based tasks with interactive environments and assesses genuine understanding of processes (e.g., ERP dashboard). The measurement gain effect makes it possible to precisely measure not only the final result but also individual solution paths and cognitive strategies by capturing process data. The tool effect maximizes objectivity through standardized, machine-readable formats.

Key message: Technology-based assessments are not merely a change in medium, but a diagnostic paradigm shift. They significantly increase the validity and precision of competency measurement, as they simulate authentic work processes, reveal hidden problem-solving strategies, and guarantee an absolutely objective, standardized evaluation.
