Essen

Zollverein

The city of Essen offers cultural events and activities that will delight the visitor and resident alike. The Grugahalle is a major venue for sports and music events. From the recently renovated Domschatz (cathedral treasury), one of the most important collection of ecclesiastical art in Germany, and Old Synagogue to special concert halls and theatres like the Aalto Theatre and brand-new Philharmonie, there is a diverse assortment of things to do in Essen. The city's industrial monuments include the Krupp family home (the Villa Hügel, now a museum and intimate concert venue), the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site “Zeche Zollverein” (a former coal mine), and the historical estate Margarethenhöhe. The large Lake Baldeney and the Gruga Park provide many opportunities for leisure activities in and around the water, such as sailing, hiking, and cycling.
