Prof. Dr. Michael Wala
Michael Wala teaches North American History at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. He received his academic education at the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Politik, Hamburg, with a degree in economics, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MA in History) and at the Universität Hamburg (Dr. Phil.), before he completed his Habilitation at the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Wala taught in Great Britain, in the United States, and at German universities as well as spending a year at Stanford University as a Visiting Scholar before coming to Bochum in 2004.
His research, teaching and publishing focuses, in addition to various aspects of American History, on international and transatlantic relations and most recently on the history of intelligence services. A book on Otto John, the first director of the German internal intelligence agency and written with Benjamin Carter Hett (CUNY), was be published by Rowohlt in May 2019.
