Lab Focus
Who We Are
AG Schwarzer Lab Group

We are a research group at the Institute for the Research on HIV and AIDS-associated Diseases (HIV-AAD), University Hospital Essen. Our work focuses on how the cellular microenvironment, metabolism, and architecture influence viral replication and persistence. We study HIV latency, antiviral host responses, and Orthohantavirus-induced remodeling, integrating virology, immunology, and molecular cell biology. By linking metabolic and environmental regulation to viral reservoir dynamics, we aim to uncover new therapeutic and curative strategies against persistent and acute viral infections.

What We Study
HIV Reservoir and Cure Research

HIV Persistence and Reservoirs

Characterization of HIV reservoirs and viral persistence in individuals with HIV, both on and off antiretroviral therapy (ART).

HIV Pathogenesis

HIV Pathogenesis

Understanding HIV infection outcomes and the underlying mechanisms of immune cell death.

Metabolism of Viral Infections

Metabolism of Viral Infections

Studying the metabolic crosstalk between viruses infections and host cells to uncover new therapeutic targets.

Antivirals Research

Antivirals and Cure Strategies

Development and testing of new antiviral compounds and strategies to control viral persistence.

Emerging Viruses
