Research topics

The Institute for materials science of the faculty of Engineering covers materials science on a broad scale. Functional and building materials are the two strongest research areas. Non-metallic-inorganic functional materials and composites are the main research topics in the field of functional materials. Frost and durability in concrete are the classic topics for the building material area. Due to the long term research on this topic, the group has quite some expertise and offers services for the outreach. Materials for thermal insulation and high-temperature building materials are the two dynamic new research areas at the institute. Two new topics in the civil engineering area of our institute are the aging of bitumen and the thermal conductivity of asphalt. These activities are supplemented by organic functional materials and hybrids for photovoltaics.
