In February 2013 Prof. Dr. Thomas Heberer was emerited. Upon his retirement the Rector of the University of Duisburg-Essen has awarded him a Senior Professorship for Politics and Society in China in order to provide a platform for the continuation of both his expertise in China studies and his research projects. Since, he is still actively involved in conducting basic research on China and its political and social developments.
Current research projects include a scientific research program titled “New Political Representative Claims: A Global View (Brazil, China, India, France & Germany)” sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG), and follow-up research on strategic behavior of Chinese private entrepreneurs in the aftermath of the ‘Competence Network’ “Governing in China: Prerequisites, Constraints and Potentials for Political Adaption and Innovation Capacity in the 21st Century“. The results of his projects are well documented in his list of Publications.
Fieldwork and cooperation with national and international partner organizations are crucial for his research projects. Of special importance are his relationship to the Chair of Greater China Studies at the University of Tuebingen (Prof. Dr. Gunter Schubert) and various Chinese universities and research institutes. Currently, he is also working on patterns of social disciplining and civilizing processes in the context of China’s modernization process.
