Storing and archiving data with Nextcloud
Nextcloud is an open source cloud storage solution for your everyday research needs – whether you're working alone or in a team. Nextcloud allows researchers to store and exchange data as well as access it from different devices and locations, e.g. from the lab and the office. In addition, Nextcloud serves as a user-friendly interface to archive data on UDE's own storage resources.
For researchers at UDE, Nextcloud is available in three different functionalities:
- For general research purposes: Sciebo
- As a dedicated collaborative platform for institutes, chairs, and projects: Individual Nextcloud instances
- As a user interface to access ZIM's object storage resources: RDS-Nextcloud
Sciebo
What is Sciebo?
- Nextcloud-based, NRW-wide cloud storage service for higher education
- Operated by the University of Münster
- 30 GB of storage for every user (can freely be expanded to 500 GB)
- Designed to be used in research, studies, and teaching for all members of the university
- Low entry threshold: intuitive interface for data organization

- Designed for active work with and exchange of data/files
- Accessible from any location
- Project boxes for research groups and institutes
- Collaborative work with role management
- Collaborative file editing (Sciebo Online Office)

Individual Nextcloud instances for institutes and projects
Info
Institutes, chairs and projects can request a dedicated Nextcloud instance. This will allow for flexible user management (including access for external contributors), integrating your own storage resources for requirements that are too complex for Sciebo, and a closed system in which data cannot be accidentally made accessible to outside parties.

Archiving data with the RDS Nextcloud
Info
The RDS Nextcloud is intended primarily for archiving research data. It serves as a portal to UDE's object storage. The user-friendly interface makes it easy to deliver the data you want to archive. Researchers can, for example, with with data in the object storage and then archive it directly.

- Frontend to access the UDE's storage resources
- Easy transfer of large volumes of data for archiving purposes
- Archive research data for 10 years (in accordance with the guidelines of good research practice)
- 2 TB of free storage for each chair
