United in Separation - The Virtual Institute - Research

Research

Scientific activities of the Institute are focused on the research and development in the field of Precision Analytics for Personalized Medicine and includes system biology, development of new analytical platforms but also non-target environmental analysis to identify new harmful substances.

We try to unite the advantages of western and eastern medicine to help medical doctors in the whole world to optimize the treatment of patients. Only after the precise knowledge of the imbalance of the body at a given disease a comprehensive treatment of the disease is possible. Here, system biology is usefull. It is a young branch of science providing a more holistic perspective compared to the traditional and rather hypothesis-driven approach in biological and biomedical research. It synergistically fuses quantitative experimental data of dynamic processes obtained from bioanalytical chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and medical research with mathematical methods and models from the fields of stochastic, statistics, computer and systems science. Such interdisciplinary generation and interpretation of big and multidimensional data allows identifying, modeling and understanding fundamental dynamic concepts of the cellular function: The quantitative information obtained from the molecular level (genes/transcripts/ proteins/metabolites/lipids) to higher levels of organization such as organelles, cells, tissues and even complete organisms will deliver an integrative snap shot of life. Given the current and prospective technical progress, systems biology holds an enormous potential to fundamentally transform and lift life and biomedical sciences
to the next level of research.

The members of this institute will be placed in a position to find appropriate cooperation partners in China and Germany, which will enable the use of the great know-how and equipment of the virtual institute for processing real questions. Thus, the members will become able to carry out projects successfully that they could not manage before for financial reasons, missing samples and/or because of missing expertise.

Besides the research activities the Institute United in Separation is strongly involved in training of undergraduate and graduate students, supervising their bachelor, master and Ph.D. theses, and in teaching at universities in China and Germany.
