Unter der wissenschaftlichen Koordination von Prof. Dr. Antonia Barke, Prof. Dr. Rolf-Detlef Treede und Prof. Winfried Rief erarbeitete eine internationale, interdisziplinäre Expert:innengruppe eine neue Systematik chronischer Schmerzen, die erstmals das biopsychosoziale Schmerzmodell in der ICD verankert. Die neue Klassifikation umfasst unter anderem chronische neuropathische Schmerzen, Schmerzen nach Verletzungen, Operationen oder Krebserkrankungen sowie die neu definierte Diagnose der chronischen primären Schmerzen.

Diese Erweiterungen haben weitreichende Konsequenzen für Versorgung, Forschung und Gesundheitspolitik. Die klaren, konsens- und evidenzbasierten Definitionen ermöglichen gezielte Forschungsprogramme zu Prävention und Behandlung, dienen als Grundlage für nationale und internationale Leitlinien und schaffen die Voraussetzungen für eine bessere Versorgung von Menschen mit chronischen Schmerzen.

Die Arbeiten zur ICD‑11-Klassifikation werden durch unsere Arbeitsgruppe wissenschaftlich intensiv begleitet. Dazu gehörte die Beteilung an den WHO-Feldtests, Feldtests unter realen Bedingungen in Ländern verschiedener Einkommensniveaus sowie die Entwicklung und Überprüfung eines diagnostischen Algorithmus.
