Internships (Famulatur) and Practical Year terms in China

The cooperation agreements with our Chineses partners include internships for medical students from our faculty.  As a result of the language barriers, the surgical disciplines are particularly suited to this exchange. However, an insight into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is also offered.
Each year, Tongji Medical College offers 10 medical students from Essen the opportunity to do their internship in Wuhan. Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University offers 6 internships annually and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou 3 to 5 internships to German students. The interns have to cover their own travel and living expenses while lodging is provided by the host universities.
Additionally, in 2017 we have started to offer practical year terms at Tongji Medical College in Wuhan. From the organizational point of view and in order to guarantee a successful stay in Wuhan we recommend to split one trimester and reduce it to a 2-months' stay in Wuhan, preferably in the field of surgical disciplines. We also recommend to choose rather the 2nd or 3rd trimester for a stay in China within the Practical Year.  

How to apply

  1. We would need your application a.s.a.p., the earlier the better. You may contact us at

    then we can tell you immediately if there are still places available.
  2. When you have made your decision please hand in the follwing form with your original signature to our China-Office at Robert-Koch-Haus:

    With our acceptance of this application form you are listed for your destination of choice. We consider the application as a binding decision from your side which should not be cancelled unless any severe cirumstances.
  3. Approximately 5 months before the intended beginning of your stay we will contact you again for more documents (CV, cover letter, passport copy etc.) which we will hand in to our cooperation partners.  
  4. We will receive their official invitation letter (admission notice). With this admission notice you will apply for a "X2" student visa (approximately 2-3 months before the  beginning of your stay).    

Our partners cover the accomodations costs, you cover your travel, visa and living costs.
