Digitization in Education – “Education in Childhood, Youth and Family" and "Vocational Education and Training"
Goal and Structure of the Project
The meta-research project accompanies the projects of the funding scheme "Digitization in Education" run by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. For this purpose, project work and results are recorded and discussed in dialogue and expert forums. The "state of research" of central questions of digital learning will be determined in critical reviews, communicated via various gateways for specific sectors (early education, schools, vocational education and training, adult education/continuing education, teacher training) and confronted with current research questions and results of the funded projects. In particular, the project reflects design-oriented educational research and knowledge communication and contributes to the development of theory and scientific knowledge as well as to problem-solving in the fields of educational practice and policy. Because of these diverse and extensive tasks, the meta-research project "Digitization in Education" is a collaborative platform of a joint project.
The IAQ is a partner of the LEARNING LAB (LL, University of Duisburg-Essen) and is responsible for the sectors "Education in Child and Youth Welfare Services" and "Vocational Education and Training". The University of Duisburg-Essen is working on the meta-research project in cooperation with the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE, Bonn), the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF, Frankfurt) and the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media (IWM, Tübingen).
Procedure
Concerning “Education in Child and Youth Welfare Services” and "Vocational Education and Training", the research department BEST is responsible for the
- planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of dialogue and expert forums,
- communication with the funded projects from these sectors,
- participation in the preparation of files for the processing of the state of research,
- identification of relevant research questions and priority topics.
In the sector “Education in Child and Youth Welfare Services” early education, there are only few projects to date. The meta-research project will initially focus on early education, as there are only few research results in this area so far. Thus, one challenge for the meta-research project is to provide an impetus for further research and to make findings from other education sectors (especially from the school sector) and from the field of social services (especially social work) available for questions of digitization in early education. In a subproject within the framework of the meta-research project, this sector will be examined from the point of view of organizational sociology. The focus of the subproject is on how to deal with digitization in child daycare facilities, which are the central institutions of early education. The main issues in this context relate to changes and the need for change concerning work organization, qualification and staff development, implementation of digital teaching and learning media as well as potentials for digital support of observation, documentation and promotion procedures. An extension of the work in the meta-research project to other fields of youth welfare is planned.
In the sector "Vocational Education and Training", there is, on the one hand, a need for change in terms of content due to the increasing digitization of work processes. On the other hand, digital didactic innovations allow for new hybrid learning environments which are independent of time and location. These developments can be observed across a wide range of professions and industries. A further aspect concerns the changes in the working methods of educational institutions (vocational schools and providers of education or training) and the requirements resulting from digitization for the qualification and staff development of teachers. These topics will be developed and completed in cooperation with the participating projects.
