Research project: Home Time. Leisure and Everyday Life in the 20th Century

This research project explores the question of how people spent their leisure time in the 20th century. While labour history is a long-established research topic, historical aspects of leisure time have been largely neglected. This project addresses this research gap. The initial focus lies on places of leisure activity that not only illustrate diverse interests and conflicts of interest, but also compromise as a common technique for settling them: the clubhouse, the allotment garden and the urban flea market. The history and development of concrete leisure activities such as club activities, gardening or private collecting passions are subsequently derived from these spatial constellations. The specific focus is on individual motivations, accessibility as well as the specific prerequisites for the chosen activities.
