Interviews from the International Conference 2023

During the International Conference of the research group “Cultures of Compromise” (2023), our student and research assistants conducted in-depth interviews with our esteemed guest speakers and scholars. The conference took place at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen. The interviews will be published here starting 12 February, with a new interview coming each Monday:

Alin Fumurescu (University of Houston)

Alin Fumurescu is an associate professor at the University of Houston, USA. In his research, Prof. Fumurescu explores the political and philosophical history of compromise, among other topics. His keynote lecture at the conference was titled “The Shame of Compromise? The Politics of Education and the Education of Politics.” More information on Prof. Fumurescu’s research interests can be found here. The interview was conducted by the student assistants Mathis Knospe (University of Münster) and Andrew Wittenbrink (University of Duisburg-Essen) on 22 June 2023.

Friderike Spang (University of Lausanne)

Dr. Friderike Spang is a senior researcher at the University of Lausanne. In the research project “Understanding Political Compromises in Democracies”, she investigates compromise as an essential, but ambivalently valued tool of negotiation in the context of democratic decision-making processes. Her talk during the conference was titled “Confronting Climate Compromise: A Double Role for the Emotions.” The interview was conducted in June 2023 by Nadine Henn (graduate research assistant) and Andrew Wittenbrink (student assistant, both from the University of Duisburg-Essen).

Elizabeth Anthony (U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington D.C.)

Dr. Elizabeth Anthony is the director of the Visiting Scholar Program at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Her research focuses on the postwar Jewish community of Vienna and the records of the International Tracing Service archive (ITS). During the conference, she held a keynote lecture titled “The Compromise of Return: Viennese Jews after the Holocaust.” Further information on her research can be found here. Anna Junge (TU Berlin)

Anna Junge is a doctoral candidate at at the Center for Research on Antisemitism, TU Berlin, and an associate at the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies, University of Potsdam. Her paper at the conference was titled “Between Relinquishment and Compromise: Jewish Survivors Striving for Normality in Postwar Rural Germany.” More information on Anna Junge’s research interest can be found here. Yusuke Hirai (University of Tsukuba)

Yusuke Hirai is an associate professor at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. Daniel Weinstock (McGill University, Montréal)

Daniel Weinstock is a full professor at the Faculty of Law (McGill University, Montreál). During our international conference at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, he held a keynote lecture called „Compromise and Trust.” His research interests concern moral and political philosophy and deal with questions of justice and inclusion in various fields.
