Experiments in Isolated Cardiomyocytes from Mouse, Rat and Pig

After perfusion of a heart in a Langendorff system with an enzymatically active solution, the myocardium is digested, and individual cells are available. Adult, terminally differentiated cardiomyocytes are then isolated from the suspension. Using these isolated cardiomyocytes, the effect of hypoxia/reoxygenation can be investigated in analogy to ischemia/reperfusion in the whole heart by analysing the cell damage. Basic mechanisms of protection can be tested at the cellular level.
