Clinical „Proof-of-concept“ Studies

Many experimental studies have shown that repeated periods of reduced blood flow in organs and tissues remote from the heart can protect the heart from the damage caused by reduced blood flow. We are investigating this remote cardioprotection at the University Hospital Essen in cooperation with the cardiac surgery and anaesthesiology departments within the framework of cardiosurgical operations.

The remote conditioning also works in patients under isoflurane anaesthesia. The repeated inflation/deflation of a blood pressure cuff on the arm protects the heart from acute damage during heart surgery. In addition, the post-operative complications and mortality of patients are also reduced by such remote conditioning ( J Am Coll Cardiol . 2018 Jan 16;71(2):252-254. doi: 10.1016/j.jacc.2017.10.083. ).
