Description

Electrical engineering is an extremely versatile field without whose components and systems many of today's products and production facilities would not function. Electrical engineering includes the following subfields, among others:

  • Automation technology: measurement, control, regulation and monitoring of technical processes, for example in production plants, vehicles, aircraft.
  • Electrical power engineering: Generation, transport and storage of electrical energy (incl. renewable energies).
  • Micro- and optoelectronics: Manufacturing technologies of components, circuit technology for electronic circuits.
  • Communications engineering: transmission of information via cables, optical fibers, radio waves, complex communication networks.
  • Computer Engineering: information processing, computer systems, computer networks, software technologies.

The Bachelor's program does not yet include specialization. Thus, sufficient basics are acquired, both for a subsequent research-oriented Master's program and for different fields of activity and application, which typically change several times in the course of a professional life. Fields of activity are, for example, research and development, project planning, sales, production, maintenance, training. Fields of application can be found in the electrical engineering industry, in information and communication technology, the energy industry, mechanical/plant engineering, the automotive industry, aerospace, chemistry, process engineering, medical technology, in engineering offices, software houses, with management consultants, in research institutions and with public authorities.

  • general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
  • a relevant subject-linked university entrance qualification
  • a certificate recognized as equivalent by law or by the competent state authority
  • proof of a special course-related technical aptitude (choice of subjects, grades) and sufficient general education (e.g. entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences)
  • access to the study program is also granted to those who have qualified in vocational education. Further details are regulated by § 11 of the admission regulations of the University of Duisburg-Essen

Admission

Unrestricted admission (study places are not limited)

Enrollment takes place during the enrollment period at the student registrar's office on Campus Duisburg.

Prospective students from non-EU countries submit their application to uni-assist  by 15.07. This applies to all German-language Bachelor's degree programs and includes applications for direct admission to the study program.

Aptitude assessment procedure

Admission to the program is also possible for those qualified in vocational education (§ 49 Abs. 6 HG, see Regulations on Admission to Higher Education for Those Qualified in Vocational Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen). For further information, please also refer to the Examination Regulations, §1, paras. 2 and 4, and to the corresponding pages in the section Enrolment (Studies for Vocationally Qualified Students).

Additional language skills

In the international environment of electrical engineering and information technology, English plays an increasing role as an international technical language. The aim of the program is therefore also to impart a familiarity with the English technical language through the use of the English language in selected courses. Appropriate language skills are therefore expected from the second semester onwards.

Internships accompanying studies

During the course of study, students must complete a supervised work placement (industrial internship) of at least 12 weeks. It results in 12 ECTS credits
