23 May 2022 External influence in the Western Balkans

On 30 May, László Szerencsés will be a guest in Oliver Schwarz's Masters seminar "Normative Power Europe". László Szerencsés is a PhD student at the Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz and is working on the topic "From nation-building to political survival: Turkish foreign policy in Kosovo and Serbia (2013-2018)". He is currently on a DAAD scholarship at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He will talk to the students about "External influence in the Western Balkans: Russia, Turkey, China".

20 May 2022 EU integration and autocratization of political systems

On 9 June, the SOG branch Duisburg will hold a hybrid workshop on "EU integration and autocratization of political systems: Institutional resilience in the Western Balkans and Turkey" at the Institute of Political Science. The workshop takes place in cooperation with the University of Graz and with financial support from the DAAD. Further information on the workshop can be found here.

19 May 2022 Bosnia-Herzegovina: Processing the Past and the Future of the State

On 30 May, Prof. Dr. Florian Bieber from the Centre for Southeast European Studies at the University of Graz will be a guest at the SOG branch in Duisburg. He will give an online lecture on "Bosnia-Herzegovina: Processing the Past and the Future of the State". The lecture will take place online via Zoom from 17:15 to 18:45. The event is open to the public and is open to all interested parties. Prior registration is not required. For more information, please see the event flyer.

9 May 2022 Council of Europe

On 16 May, Dr Tobias Flessenkemper, Head of Office of the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade, will be a guest in Oliver Schwarz's Masters seminar "Normative Power Europe". He will talk to the students about the work of the Council of Europe. The focus will be on the topics of democracy, the rule of law and human rights in South-Eastern Europe, especially in Serbia.

17 February 2022 Turning Points

From 31 March to 1 April, Oliver Schwarz will participate in the workshop "Turning Points in Democracies". In the panel "Brexit" he will present his latest research on the topic "Brexit: From ever closer to ever looser Union?". All contributions to the workshop will be published in an edited volume.
