Safe Ruhr - bathing waters and drinking water supply for the Ruhr area

The joint research project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the "Risk Management of Pollutants and Pathogens in the Water Cycle" initiative (RISKWA) and aims at developing a comprehensive risk-management concept for drinking water supply and a possible use of the Ruhr as bathing water.

Scientists of the Department of Aquatic Ecology analyse the composition of trematode communities in snails in the Ruhr, providing a basis for the risk-assessment of water usage with regard to potential trematode infections in humans, causing cercarial dermatitis or swimmer's itch.
