W-VO Project

Restoring nature is a key objective of the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 to counteract the ongoing loss of biodiversity and the effects of climate change in the EU. Over 80% of habitats in Europe are in poor condition. The entry into force of the ordinance on the restoration of nature (Wiederherstellungsverordnung, W-VO) on 18.08.2024 marked the start of a new chapter in German nature conservation. For the first time, legally binding and staggered restoration targets were set for all EU member states. Accordingly, restoration measures must be taken on at least 20% of land and marine areas by 2030 and in all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.

The aim of the W-VO project is to support the planning and implementation of national restoration plans. To this end, technical analyses are carried out, targeted measures for restoration in inland and coastal ecosystems are identified and project results are communicated with the federal states and other relevant stakeholders.

The W-VO project will be worked on by the Aquatic Ecology from 12.2024-12.2025 with a focus on inland waters and floodplains as well as urban ecosystems. The project is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz).
