Environmental Crisis and the Problem of Realism
Environmental journalists, novelists, film-makers and artists have traditionally preferred realist genres and styles to highlight the materiality and scientific grounding of environmental crises. Over the last twenty years, this convention has increasingly come into question. On one hand, climate change and other rapidly evolving ecological crises have diminished the relevance of stories and images focused primarily on individuals and families, particular places, and events commonly considered plausible. On the other hand, narrative themes and plots from speculative fiction have increasingly spread into environmental journalism and nonfiction. Concepts such as the "new normal," the "New Weird," and "hyperobjects" have sought to capture this altered type of realism.
This lecture will explore the controversies about what kinds of realism are appropriate and effective in environmental communication today, and it will argue that the narrative strategies of science fiction, traditionally considered a secondary or minor genre merely designed for entertainment, offer the most interesting foundations for thinking and talking about global environmental change.

Book launch: Charting Literary Urban Studies
UA Ruhr cooperation with the University of Cincinnati
Eine UDE-Delegation bestehend aus Prof. Dr. Rolf Parr (Germanistik, Literatur und Medienpraxis), Dr. Thomas Küp per (Germanistik, Literatur und Medienpraxis) und Prof. Dr. Jens Martin Gurr (Anglistik, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft und Sprecher des Profilschwerpunkts „Urbane Systeme“) war in der vergangenen Woche an der University of Cincinnati (UC) zu Gast zur Unterzeichnung von Kooperationsverträgen.Ein Rahmenvertrag begründet eine breit angelegte Zusammenarbeit zwischen der University of Cincinnati und den Universitäten der Universitätsallianz Ruhr in Forschung, Lehre und hinsichtlich des Austauschs von Studierenden, Lehrenden sowie Verwaltungspersonal. Diese Zusammenarbeit war beim Besuch einer hochrangigen Delegation der University of Cincinnati im Ruhrgebiet im Oktober 2018 vereinbart und seither weiter ausgestaltet worden. Prof. Dr. Rolf Parr, der die Zusammenarbeit durch ein gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Todd Herzog (German and Media Studies) seit 2012 jährlich durchgeführtes „Transatlantic Seminar“ begründet hat und als Beauftragter des Rektorats für diese Partnerschaft fungiert, freut sich über die nunmehr auch formal vereinbarte Zusammenarbeit: „Eine solche über Jahre hinweg gewachsene Partnerschaft ist eine großartige Basis für die nun auf alle Fakultäten und Fächer der UAR ausgedehnte Kooperation, die bereits vielfältig angelaufen ist.“
Workshop with Urban Historian Norman Klein
Hosted by Jens Martin Gurr, pioneering urban historian Norman Klein visited the Department of Anglophone Studies and the KWI (Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen) for two guest lectures and a collaborative research workshop. The media historian, novelist and media artist and Professor of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles joined Jens Martin Gurr in hosting a workshop on “Media, Memory and the City”, which took place at the KWI on 26 November 2019.
