Automated aerosol sampling and analysis
In the synthesis of nanoparticles, rapid characterization of particle properties as a function of process conditions is essential for efficient exploration of the synthesis parameter spaces. Automated sampling and rapid characterization of synthesized nanoparticles are made possible by a device that integrates multiple diagnostic techniques with a motorized filter belt mechanism. The realtime-aerosol materials sampler and analyzer (RAMSA) enables the sequential collection and analysis of particle samples under precisely defined and reproducible conditions, thereby facilitating accelerated characterization of novel material systems. This instrument allows for the evaluation of correlations between process parameters and the resulting material properties across a broad parameter space.
The particle samples deposited on the filter belt are currently characterized quickly using a series of optical measurement methods. RGB imaging enables a rapid qualitative assessment of the sample surface and thus the detection of macroscopic inhomogeneities, spatial color variations, and potential defects in the deposition process. Diffuse reflection spectroscopy provides spectrally resolved information about the absorption properties of the materials. Raman spectroscopy examines the molecular structure and crystallographic phases of the material and provides insights into its phase composition.
In the future, RAMSA will evaluate multiple material properties simultaneously, including the optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties of the collected particles. The integration of automated sampling with data acquisition and analysis routines enables high-throughput material screening and data-driven evaluation of synthesis methods, which serves as the basis for autonomous and adaptive experimentation.
