Immersive Technolgies

The term extended reality (XR) can mean many things: it can mean immersing ourselves in fully virtual environments in virtual reality (VR) as well as experiencing virtual agents or objects embedded in the real world through augmented reality (AR). We explore the vast possibilities of XR applications across diverse fields such as health, education, and entertainment, while exploring benefits and challenges of interacting with XR technologies. In the process, we aim to create compelling immersive experiences for a variety of audiences.

Meaningful Experiences

We design, create, and evaluate innovative and playful interaction concepts for novel or experimental digital applications. In our research, we combine knowledge from human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, and digital games research to provide meaningful and enriching experiences for our target groups, thereby enhancing their well-being in everyday life.

Playful Social Interactions

Social interactions significantly determine the experience of being in collaborative virtual environments or playing digital multiplayer games. We investigate the social user experience as the result of various influencing factors present in specific application contexts. Our research aims to understand the effects of embodiment and the social psychological processes that occur during gaming on the immersive, social, and emotional user experience.

Transformative Effects

Our research revolves around creating and understanding digital experiences that have a transformative impact on users, systems, or processes. By exploring the convergence of technology, design, and immersive virtual worlds, we focus on how interactive entertainment computing can exceed mere amusement and evoke profound emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses in individuals. Understanding play allows us to utilize beneficial transformative effects like motivation and learning caused by digital games in various domains.
