Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQ on IwiS courses
How does course registration work?
Registration for IwiS courses is only possible via LSF.
Please select the respective semester, select the IwiS course you would like to join, and register by clicking on “Apply” to participate in the lottery or first-come, first-served allocation process.
Specific information on in some cases differing procedures and application deadlines can be found on the following pages:
- E1 Methodological skills (in German)
- E1 Language courses (in English)
- E3 Liberal studies (in German)
You should definitely read these before applying!
UDE employees or students at UA Ruhr partner universities (Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund) can register for IwiS courses by sending an email to the relevant IwiS department, stating your desired course title, student ID number, degree program, and university:
- Methodological skills E1: schluesselkompetenzen@uni-due.de
- Liberal studies E3: studium-liberale@uni-due.de
If you are a UDE employee, a UA Ruhr or Folkwang student, please fill in this form in case you want to register for up to three language courses.
Our courses are for UDE and UAR students/staff only. Participation of unaffiliated persons (private individuals or guest students) is not possible.
How does exam registration work?
Should the course you are enrolled in commence with a written examination, you are registered for it by default. No additional registration with the central examination office or IwiS is necessary.
If you deregister from the course in LSF, you are also deregistered from the exam.
In a few cases, however, lecturers may request a different registration procedure for the exam, which will be announced at the beginning of the course. Any exceptions known to us are noted in the course description in LSF.
Which courses can I register for in the modules E1/E3?
You can select courses according to your individual needs or areas of interest. You can find out whether you are eligible to enroll in the selected course or whether there are any restrictions imposed by your faculty in the respective course descriptions in LSF.
In addition, you can find out which courses you need to take and how many credits you need to earn in the supplementary area in the program-specific information:
- Module E1 requirements on credits and grades by degree program (in German)
- Module E3 requirements on credits and grades by degree program (in German)
Is attendance mandatory for IwiS courses?
Attendance at IwiS language courses is compulsory, since the course's learning objectives can only be achieved through the active participation (engagement) of all attendees. Regular participation in a language course is a prerequisite for admission to the exam and thus for achieving credits. At least 85% of the classes must be attended in order to fulfill this requirement.
Attendance is compulsory for all other IwiS courses where the proportion of practical exercises is so high that achieving the course's learning objectives would not be possible without continuous participation. These courses are marked as “exercise” or “project seminar” in LSF. In these cases, at least 75% of the attendance sessions must be attended in order to gain credits.
How and where do I receive my course results and my course certificate?
As soon as we have received and processed the results from our lecturers, we forward them to the examinations office. The examinations office will enter the grade into your HISinOne account.
We also publish the grades in anonymized form on our homepage. Once your results are available, you may request a certificate to be issued to you during our office hours.
It is not possible to send certificates by email. However, we will be happy to send you the certificate by post. Please send us an email from your official student email address and provide us with your student ID number, the course title (including the semester) and your postal address.
If no result has been added to your transcript of records in HISinOne, please contact your designated contact person at the examinations office directly.
How can I have previous achievements credited (e.g. from a previous degree program or a stay abroad)?
The recognition of previous achievements is carried out by the respective examination board of your degree program.
Exception: Students of the Faculty of Humanities and the two educational science degree programs Psychology and Social Work can contact IwiS directly.
To have your exam results recognized, please use the recognition form provided by the examinations office and send it, together with the relevant documentation (copy of your transcript or proof of performance), by email to the IwiS department responsible.
For which language courses do I have to take a placement test, and how does it work?
For German, English, French, Italian, and Spanish, you must take our placement tests before registering for a language course (A1 to C2) – even if you have no previous knowledge of the language.
Our placement test is a C-test, a type of cloze test that assesses general language proficiency. The test consists of five short, self-contained texts, each containing 20 gaps. The total of 100 gaps must be filled in by adding the missing parts of words. You have 25 minutes to complete the test.
Further information can be found on our homepage under Placement Test.
If you are a UDE employee or a student enrolled in a different UAR university and cannot access our tests, please contact us by email sprachkurse@uni-due.de.
Which language exams can be taken at IwiS?
DAAD exams for the English language are held regularly at the University of Duisburg-Essen. For information on exam dates, exam requirements, and the registration period, please refer to the course catalog (LSF).
Requests for DAAD examinations in other languages can be submitted by email [sprachkurse@uni-due.de].
In cooperation with the Düsseldorf district government, the IwiS administers state extension tests to the Abitur, which lead to the Latinum, Graecum, and Hebraicum.
